Sun Kisses the Day Goodnight

When you chase sunsets, it’s not only about the beauty of the sky, but the experience. During this chase, my Jeep delivered me to where I spend most of my days… the airport.

Since I was 16, I’ve never known a job without a runway. It’s a view that never grows old.

I love this time at airports… Watching the beauty of a sunset, yet observing the orchestra of controlled chaos called aviation.

On a Saturday night, the chaos of the day was beginning to slow… From the sound of jet engines spooling down; smell of Jet A fuel drifting through the air; to the enjoyable conversation with a police officer as we watch the sun descend lower.

As shadows move across the runways, I watch… flightline personnel chat, their feet propped on a tug; silhouettes of Air Traffic Controllers in the tower; mechanics arrive for their shift, preparing to give each bird the tender loving care they deserve throughout the night.

As the sun kisses the day goodnight, I said goodbye to my friendly police officer, and take a quick stroll through the terminal.

I love this journey too and watch… loved ones reunite in a flurry of hugs and kisses; a lonely business man lost in a world of his own; weary crewmembers preparing for their ride to the hotel; ticket agents closing down for the night.

When I return outside, the glow of the sun is replaced by a beautiful September moon. Now it’s time to drive… on a warm late summer night, these are the best drives and the best flights.
