Native Americans referred to this area as the Big Swamp and remained insignificant for most of history; however, this all changed in 1826 when the state of Ohio began construction of the Erie Canal stretching from the Ohio River to Lake Erie.

To support water levels in the new canal, a dam was built along the Big Swamp to divert water from the South Fork of the Licking River. As the swamp began to fill, the large lake took shape, becoming a feeder for the new canal.

The new lake was named Licking Summit Reservoir. Once railroads eventually replaced the canal, the state of Ohio renamed this body of water, Buckeye Lake; which remains a recreational lake east of Columbus, Ohio.

On this night, music was playing from the local waterfront bars, while the sky put on her beautiful show.
